To accompany the Sustainability First Art and Writing Prizes 2021, this year we launched two new prizes under our 'People's Choice Award'.
The People's Choice Award was open to all shortlisted works from the Sustainability First Art and Writing Prizes 2021.
The People’s Choice Award 2021 compromised an online public vote in which one artwork and one writing entry was selected from the Sustainability First Art and Writing Prizes 2021 shortlisted works. The artwork and writing entry that received the highest number of votes each received £500.
Chloe Uden and the Art and Energy Collective won the art prize for the Moths to a Flame project and Janice Ng won the writing prize for her essay ‘How do we achieve meaningful social changes in the UK to tackle the climate crisis and develop a fairer society?’
People’s Choice Award 2021 Terms and Conditions
1. About
1.1. The People’s Choice Award 2021 (“the Competition”) organised by Sustainability First, compromises an online vote in which one (1) winning artwork and one (1) winning writing entry are selected from the Sustainability First Art and Writing Prizes 2021 shortlisted works. Shortlisted works were chosen by an independent judging panel appointed by Sustainability First. Full details on this judging process can be found in the Sustainability First Art and Writing Prizes 2021 Terms and Conditions.
1.2 For The People’s Choice Award 2021 the one (1) winning artwork and one (1) winning writing entry will each receive a prize of £500.
1.3 The Competition is open to all shortlisted works from the Sustainability First Art and Writing Prizes 2021, excluding work submitted by Gina Allen who has kindly requested that her work not be included in the Competition.

1.6 Voters will be asked to submit their vote through SurveyMonkey, which can be accessed here.
1.7 The winning artwork and winning writing entry will be announced in November 2021.
2. Vote Terms and Conditions of Entry
2.1. The Competition will open at 9:00 BST on Friday 1 October 2021.
2.2 Votes must be cast by 23:59 BST on Sunday 31 October 2021 (“the closing date”).
2.3 Only one (1) vote for the winning artwork and one (1) vote for the winning writing entry is permitted per person and will be restricted to one (1) vote per Internet Protocol ("IP") address. Any data collected will be deleted by Sustainability First following the annoucement of the prize winners.
2.6 Members of the judging panel, National Grid staff members (as sponsors of the programme), shortlisted entrants, Sustainability First team and staff members, Associates, Trustees and Patrons will not be eligible to vote in the Competition.
2.7 The winning artwork will be the work with the highest number of votes of the shortlisted work from the Sustainability First Art Prize 2021. In the event of a tie, the £500 prize money will be split between the joint winners.
2.8 The winning writing entry will be the work with the highest number of votes of the shortlisted work from the Sustainability First Writing Prize 2021. In the event of a tie, the £500 prize money will be split between the joint winners.
2.9 By entering the Vote, voters agree to the terms and conditions of entry.
2.10 In the event of unforeseen circumstances, Sustainability First reserves the right to cancel, modify, extend or suspend the Vote.
2.11 Sustainability First reserves the right to modify these Terms and Conditions at any time on giving notice through its website www.sustainabilityfirst.org.uk/prizes.
2.12 Sustainability First reserves its right to discount invalid votes and may withhold or withdraw any Award which has been given as a result of invalid votes.
3. Display of the Competition winners
3.1. Sustainability First will display The People’s Choice Award 2021 Competition winners digitally – as an online exhibition and on social media.
3.2. National Grid will display The People’s Choice Award 2021 Competition winners digitally – including but not limited to on their website and social media.
3.3. The People’s Choice Award 2021 Competition winners may also be showcased in the UN climate change conference COP26, taking place in Glasgow in November 2021. This could be through our sponsorship with National Grid or through another partner. Sustainability First would confirm details with the Competition winners closer to COP26.
4. Indemnity / Limitation of Liability
4.1 To the maximum extent permitted by law, Sustainability First excludes its liability for any loss, damage, injury, cost or expense suffered by you, whether directly or indirectly and howsoever caused, in connection with the Vote.

6. Copyright and Intellectual Property
6.1 Copyright and Intellectual property relating to the writing entries and artworks is strictly controlled.No rights are or will be made available to any persons or organisations voting in The People’s Choice Award 2021 Competition or viewing the writing entries or images of art works involved in the Competition or the Sustainability First Art and Writing Prizes 2021 whether made available digitally or physically by Sustainability First or National Grid.
6.2 If any person or organisation wishes to use or share any of the writing entries or artworks involved in the Sustainability First Art and Writing Prizes 2021 or The People’s Choice Award 2021 Competition permission should be sought, in the first instance, from Sustainability First at communications@sustainabilityfirst.org.uk. Sustainability First will then consult with the owner of the copyright and/ or intellectual property to see if any permissions for use can be granted.
